At Mordiford Primary school we treasure each individual, believing that everyone is unique and valued by God. We create a nurturing, inspiring and challenging learning community rooted in Christian values: compassion, respect and love.

Through these values we are committed to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. We know that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable and, at times, anyone may need additional emotional support. We believe that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play.

At our school we:

  • help children to understand their emotions and feelings better
  • help children feel comfortable sharing any concerns or worries
  • help children socially to form and maintain relationships
  • promote self-esteem and ensure children know that they are important
  • encourage children to be confident and ‘dare to be different’
  • help children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks

We offer different levels of support:

Universal Support: To meet the needs of all our pupils through our overall ethos and our wider curriculum, for instance, developing resilience for all.

Additional support: For those who may have short term needs and those who may have been made vulnerable by life experiences such as bereavement.

Targeted support: For pupils who need more differentiated support and resources or specific targeted interventions such as wellbeing groups, friendship circles or external agencies such as Butterflies (play therapy) and School Nurse involvement.

If you have any concerns about the welfare or wellbeing of your child, please contact any of the lead staff members who will be very happy to discuss your concerns and find ways that we can help.

Lead staff members:

Mrs Warmington – Head teacher & DDSL

Mr Sibcy – Deputy Head teacher & DSL

Mrs Griffith – SENDCo & Emotional Literacy Support Assistant

At Mordiford, we have 2 Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA’s).

Mrs Griffith and Mrs Farmer have special training from Educational Psychologists to support the emotional development of children and young people in school and also have regular professional supervision from Educational Psychologists to help them in their work.

Our ELSA work in school aims to help children:

  • Develop coping strategies and provide children with opportunities to talk about their worries.
  • Interact more successfully with others.
  • Develop greater self-awareness, manage school better and feel positive about themselves.
  • Pupils with an ELSA feel they have been listened to and supported.

Children are worked with either on a 1:1 basis or in small groups and parents are always made aware.
