What Music looks like at our School

Music is a key strength at Mordiford C E Primary School.  We deliver the music curriculum in a variety of ways, mixing whole class teaching, with teaching in small groups and individually.

We offer a wide range of instrumental lessons delivered by peripatetic teachers.  We currently offer flute, clarinet, saxophone, piano, guitar, drums and vocal tuition.  Teaching can be on an individual basis or in small groups.  This depends on the needs of our children.

We are very fortunate to have secured funding from our PTFA to take advantage of the wider Opportunities program run by Herefordshire Music Service – Encore Enterprises.  This means that in Year 4 EVERY child learns to play an instrument alongside their peers.  The hour long session includes singing, games and tuition on the instrument (currently clarinet).  This gives all children the opportunity to have access to musical tuition whatever their personal circumstances.

Our music coordinator teaches music in other year groups to support class teachers. This includes whole class tuition, singing and composition.

We have a school ’show’  choir who regularly perform both within the school and at outside venues.  We have taken part in many concerts both locally and further afield.  Experiences have included: Young Voices at the LG Arena in Birmingham, large scale performance in Hereford Cathedral, services in local churches, performance with the local adult community choir, singing for the residents at a local residential home for the elderly, supporting St Michael’s Hospice with their ‘Light up a Life’ switch on in High Town in Hereford, singing alongside our local community choir.

Alongside the choir, instrumentalists are given the opportunity to perform.  Recently some of our instrumentalists were given the opportunity to take part in a workshop with other talented young people in the county to develop their ensemble playing.
